Hook: Hanak Dry Fly hook
Wing: CDC
Body: Thread
This fly was the first CDC fly I ever tied. After a transitional period I pretty much gave up tying flies with traditional or parachute hackle. It is just too much work, the hackle is too expensive, it is not needed, so overall just not worth it for me.
The F-Fly is a great midge pattern for slow currents but also imitates small duns very well. Build up the body first with touching wraps of thread. Turn in the CDC wing pointing forward (!) and then fold it back. Do a couple of wraps in front of the wing in order to keep it pointing backwards.
This neat little trick allows a tiny and clean head and the CDC feathers are secured much better.
You can't go to any serious trip without having at least a couple of those in your fly box.
