Hook: Hanak Dry Fly Hook
Wing: Deer hair
Dubbing: Mix of CDC and squirrel
This fly is much quicker to tie than a traditional elkhair caddis. You just dub the body, no hackle rquired. I am quite a fan of this CDC/squirrel mix, but you could also just use hare's ear or something similar.
The CDC under the hair wing is optional, but I have seen some fish refusing X Caddis in slow currents. I suspect that deer hair is not building a silhouette which resembles an emerging insect. So I put the CDC under the wing. In faster currents you can leave it away, but since it only adds 30 seconds of work to the fly it is not much effort to put it in.
The wing is made of is mule deer hair. I think it looks much better than elk hair on this caddis pattern. Not my idea, Hans Weilenmann gave me the idea.
